Mistakes
May 2nd, 2010 . by Rob HallWhen a mistake is made by the PVA office, an exoneration has to be processed to fix the error. This correction results in a lower tax bill. In small numbers, this is not a problem for the county. It is when the number of exonerations is large that it becomes an issue. These corrections are occurring after the tax rate has been set based on the certified tax roll. Large numbers of exonerations guarantee that the tax rates were set on incomplete information. This leaves all taxing districts less funds than planned. This is because, when setting the tax rate for the year, districts have the ability to add back in the revenue lost due to the prior year exonerations. They do not though, as they do not want to further burden the county beyond the current year’s rate. Boone County has the largest amount of exonerations for the Northern Kentucky counties. We need a PVA that focuses on their job. When the PVA begins worrying about tax rates instead of the assessments, mistakes increase, costing everyone.
